Pursuing Pet Projects in Workplaces

The concept of allowing to work on one’s pet projects in office time is an innovative concept. There are companies (around the world), who have been toying with this idea and already started reaping so many benefits. What is it that motivates people to innovate? When they innovate? Only if we say that something is yours, only then people start to put their entire focus on that task and produce fabulous results? Or is it that quality time that they spend with themselves or with like-minded people while working on their pet project that helps them to produce incredible results?

Whatever is the reason, pet projects have special status in one’s own life. While working on official projects, people brainstorm a lot to prove themselves competent to their superiors and peers. They focus their entire energy on one point. They exhaust themselves. Then, they go home. Normally, in this scenario, the next step what anyone expects is to take rest. However, in the case of a person who works on a pet project in parallel, the moment he glances it, his every nerves tightens with excitement. All that exhaustiveness goes out of the window and he regains back his active energy state. Although he has to work a lot on his pet projects, he never feels that he needs lot of energy to accomplish that many tasks. And he is eager to do them without complaining about anything.

Companies and pet projects can go hand in hand. They can mutually support each other in terms of commercial aspects; that means, once a pet project becomes a success and is in line with company’s business, either it can buy it or support the person/group (who successfully completed the project), financially, by buying a stake in their project.

In summary, pet projects really excite people. If they get a chance to work up on them in their workplace, the excitement grows by leaps and bounds. And there is a chance that all like-minded hitherto introvert people also join the project and contribute their level best to make it a success.

Stretching Hours at Workplace – Right or Wrong?

Most of the people hate this work hour stretching business. However, a few people love to do this. The reasons for doing so may vary. But they do it with penchant. Nevertheless, people stretch their hours at work place in various interesting ways. If a few people don’t prefer to go after their working hours due to some family problems, others continue doing work as if there is no tomorrow after working hours to gain their superior’s attention and peer’s sympathy. Rest, simply don’t know what to do once they reach home [most of the bachelors/spinsters who are working in remote places with no night life access falls in this category] also prefer to spend their after working hours in the workplace.

However, we need to know whether stretching hours at work place is good for our career. The answer is a strict NO. The question is why you have to stretch your hours in the first place? Whatever may be your reason, it does not give a good opinion about you to your superiors.

However, if you are planning to stay late, the best thing is that you should let your superior know beforehand why you are going to do it on a particular day. Most of the times, it is better if you complete your assigned tasks on the specified time and push off at the right time from the office premises. Unnecessary stretching just to grab attention creates unwanted problems; sometimes, extra work would be passed on to you by your peers who take it for granted that you stay there at least 4 hours after your working hours. And other times, your peers may think like this; since you are not efficient for getting things done in specified time, you stretch your hours, unreasonably.

In summary, getting things done in specified number of hours when it comes to office work is good for your body, mind, soul, and career. Unnecessary stretching of hours for attention grabbing business or just to get a hike by inciting sympathy in the heart of your superior may backfire most of the times.
